India's diamond cutting and polishing industry
Since antiquity India has been known for its diamonds. The gems and jewelry sector contributed about seven percent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), and more than four million workers were reported to work in this sector in the year 2019. The diamond industry in India is principally involved in the process of cutting, polishing, and exporting diamonds. India is a world leader in the manufacturing of cut and polished diamonds. To support the diamond industry, the government of India has relaxed duties on the import of diamonds. The value of rough diamonds imported into India has increased. Within the global jewelry sector, out of every ten diamonds, nine of them would have been processed in India.
