mandatory basic health insurance (in Dutch: basisverzekering) and as an additional multitrip private insurance (in Dutch: aanvullende reisverzekering). The numbers provided here are the latter. The basic health insurance provides global coverage for all Dutch residents, should they need healthcare in a foreign country. An important rule is, though, that this insurance covers healthcare up to the same amount of money as it would cost in the Netherlands. As an example, a Dutch resident is involved in a car accident in the United States and hospital admission costs a fictional 15,000 euros. In the Netherlands, in the meantime, the same hospital treatment would maybe have been 10,000 euros. The basic health insurance would, in this example, then reimburse 10,000 euros of the 15,000 euros, like if it was in the Netherlands. Most Dutch additional multitrip travel insurances provide full coverage, making them a popular choice for consumers. In 2016, there were approximately three million policies in the Netherlands which is roughly the same number since 2012.
