The production of Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco across the southern state of Karnataka in India amounted to around 60 million kilograms in the financial year 2023. This was a decrease as compared to the previous financial year. The other leading producer of flue-cured tobacco in the country was Andhra Pradesh.
Tobacco cultivation
The production of FCV tobacco in the country accounted for about ten percent of the area and nine percent of the total production. FCV is mostly used in cigarette manufacturing. Due to its status as a regulated crop, there were fluctuations in its production in the country over the years. Despite this, India was one of the leading producers of tobacco globally after China.
Tobacco exports
India has different varieties of tobacco grown in the country, of which, FCV tobacco is the leading exportable tobacco crop. The improving quality of FCV tobacco over the years had retained India’s position in world tobacco trade. Tobacco exports from the country amounted to about 65 billion Indian rupees in the financial year 2021 with Belgium as the leading destination.
