In 2022, there were 1,060 new cases of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnosed in Belgium, this was an increase compared to the previous years. The number of cases peaked in 2013, when there were over 1.2 thousand cases of HIV diagnosed.
Cases of AIDS in Belgium
The advanced stage of the HIV virus is referred to as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The cases of AIDS in Belgium have generally decreased since 2008. Amounting to 56 new cases of AIDS in Belgium in 2017.
European situation
The number of new HIV cases among men in Europe in 2020 was at its lowest point since 2013. A similar trend can be obeserved among women. The highest number of HIV cases in 2022 was found between men aged between 30 and 39 years, with almost five thousand cases.
