Number of students enrolled in secondary education in Morocco 2000-2022
Morocco’s secondary education sector has experienced a steady growth in enrollment over the past decade, with a record high of over 3.2 million students in 2022. This represents a significant increase from the 1.5 million students enrolled in 2000, showcasing the government's efforts in that area.
Secondary education by gender
Despite the country’s disparity between men and women in areas such as economic participation and political empowerment, the gap is not as pronounced when it comes to educational attainment. For instance, in 2023, girls achieved a completion rate of 73.2 percent in lower-secondary education, while boys reached 51.1 percent. The same can be noticed in upper-secondary education. Additionally, women enrolled in lower-secondary education had an enrollment rate of 80.7 percent, compared to 74.4 percent for men.
Urban and rural education
While the overall enrollment has increased, there are some disparities between rural and urban areas. In fact, lower-secondary education registered an attendance rate of 88.4 percent for the academic year of 2021/2022 in urban areas, while rural regions only recorded 58.5 percent. Additionally, upper-secondary education further emphasizes this trend, with the urban enrollment rate reaching 62 percent, compared to 20 percent for rural areas as of the same year. This can be a result of the poor infrastructure in those regions and the limited number of institutions.
