This statistic shows the relative share of opioid abusers in the United States from 2011 to 2015, by pain-related condition. It was found that around 77 percent of those who abused prescription opioids suffered from back pain.

For the purposes of this analysis, opioid abuse was defined as
meeting the following two conditions:
1. Receiving greater than a cumulative 90-day supply
of opioids; AND
2. Receiving an opioid prescription from four or more
providers over the five-year period between 2011
and 2015.
