What is corruption and where does India stand on a global scale?
The World Bank defines corruption, as the misuse of public office for private gain and takes the form of bribery to theft of public funds and cronyism. However, it is not limited to the public sector. Private-sector corruption is usually characterized by making unjust profits by exploiting employees and consumers while flouting government regulations. In 2023, India scored 39 points on the Global Corruption Perception Index, whereas Denmark led with 90 points.
Rooting out corruption
In India, the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (PCA) defines and deals with the offenses related to corruption of public servants. Additionally, the Whistleblower Act of 2014 aims to protect people who expose corruption and irregularities in the private sector. The Companies Act of 2013 regulates corporations and aims to maintain transparency in corporate governance. These, among many other laws in India, are important moves toward rooting out corruption in the country. Additionally, public participation and free media also help improve transparency and hold public and private sectors accountable.
