Number of ryokan and hotels in Japan 2016-2023
As of the end of March 2023, there were approximately 50.32 thousand ryokan and hotels operating in Japan. Ryokan refers to traditional style inns, in which guests are most commonly sleeping on Japanese style beddings (futon) laid out on tatami mats on the ground. Hotels are usually Western-style establishments.
