In 2023, over 14.8 thousand men committed suicide in Japan. The number of female suicide victims was about half as high, amounting to approximately seven thousand.
The country's suicide rate had been on a downward trend for the past decade. In 2020, however, the number of women who took their own lives began to increase. The unexpected upward trend was probably related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, there was a noticeable increase in suicides among men.
