Vehicles in use in Belgium 2008-2020

Between 2008 and 2020, the number of vehicles on the road in Belgium increased from approximately 6.5 million units in 2008 to a total of roughly 7.65 million units in 2020. The number of electric passenger cars is also on the rise: There were almost 24,000 electric and more than 154,800 hybrid passenger cars on Belgian roads in 2020.

Costs of driving a car

Electric vehicles were the most expensive type of passenger car to drive in 2020, having the highest monthly expenditure compared to other fuel categories (costs including insurances, taxes, depreciation, and maintenance). Diesel was the cheapest fuel in 2020.

Passenger cars account for the majority of vehicle registrations

Most of the new vehicle registrations in Belgium were passenger cars. In 2020, such vehicles accounted for more than two-thirds of vehicle registrations in Belgium. As of 2019, the total volume of new passenger cars amounted to almost 558,000 units.
