The volume of wine sold domestically in Australia in the 2021 financial year amounted to 440 million liters, a decrease from the previous financial year. The volume of wine sold domestically in Australia peaked in financial year 2016 at 500 million liters.
Australian wine consumption
Per capita consumption of wine in Australia has remained largely consistent during recent years. In the 2018 financial year, Australians consumed just under 13.8 liters of white wine and 10.59 liters of red wine per person on average. Additionally, just under four liters of other types of wine were consumed in the same year per person.
Wine production and exports
Production of white wine in Australia fell in the 2019 financial year to 514 million liters. This drop represents a first in six years; during this period, production saw year on year growth, reaching 611 million liters in the financial year 2018. Conversely, red wine production saw an increase in the same year to 684 million liters, suggesting a recovery from a production drop in the 2018 financial year. Production of both white and red wine peaked in 2006, reaching 622 and 776 million liters respectively. Production levels have yet to reach these peaks.
The Australian wine industry has a worldwide reputation for good quality, and despite the reduction in exports during the early 2010s, the industry has continued to grow, reaching over 2.5 billion Australian dollars in the 2018 financial year. Growth is expected to continue until at least 2023, reaching around 3.6 billion Australian dollars during this year.
