Frankfurt Airport is one of the largest and busiest airports in the world. It consistently records the highest national passenger volume in its home country, with a roughly 31 percent share in 2023. Other leading airports in Germany included Munich and Berlin Brandenburg.
Largest German airport
Frankfurt Airport is the largest in Germany. It receives flights from around the world and is the main German gateway for traveling internationally to a variety of destinations. Germany’s flag carrier airline, Lufthansa, first departed from Frankfurt, and subsequently, the airport became the airline’s base. A third terminal is being built to accommodate large passenger flows, with completion planned for 2026. In terms of sheer numbers, Frankfurt Airport processed around 59.3 million passengers in 2023. This was an encouraging increase compared to significantly lower numbers during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021.
Arrivals and departures
The pace of Frankfurt Airport is also confirmed by the number of aircraft movements on its enormous territory. In 2023, Frankfurt stood out with around 424,000 arriving and departing flights. For comparison, Munich Airport counted 294,000, while Berlin recorded 167,000.
