According to the French National Institute for Agricultural and Marine Products (France AgriMer), the end consumer in France paid on average 20.52 euros for a kilo of raspberries produced in France in 2016. If the raspberries were organically cultivated and imported from another EU member state, then the kilo of raspberries costed 22 euros on average.
France has a low inflation rate but usually higher prices for food products
Even if France tries to comply with the inflation rate suggested by the European Central Bank and has had its annual inflation rate surpass the two percent threshold only twice since the financial crisis of 2007, the French consumer usually pays a higher price for their staple goods than some of their other EU neighbors, such as Spain, the United Kingdom or Germany. As of September 2018, 53 percent of the French believed that the prices for food would increase, while only 36 percent of the Germans and 40 percent of the Spaniards believed so .
At a European level, non-edible consumer goods are also on average more expensive in France
This concern was addressed by the French government in 2011, when the then president of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, called for the other G20 nations to put in place tighter regulation of food commodity prices. Nonetheless, prices for non-edible goods also seem to be higher than other European countries: in 2018, French had to pay on average 1,193 U.S dollars for their iPhone 8, the British 1,883 USD, the Germans and Austrians 1,181 USD and the Swiss 1,045 USD. Although the United Kingdom, thanks to its increasingly higher tobacco taxes - 2 percent above the annual inflation rate -, and Ireland have the highest retail prices in Europe for hand rolling tobacco, in France the price for this non-edible product was of 8.66 euros in 2016, while Germans had to pay 7.2 euros, Italians 6.61 and Austrians 5.63 euros.
