In recent years, the number of organ donors considerably increased, from 1,105 to 2,042 donors between 2002 and 2023. The growth was especially remarkable from 2013 onwards. It may be assumed that the possibility to make a declaration of intent about organ donation concurrently with the renewal of the Identity Document – recently introduced in many Italian cities – had an impact on the increase of organ donors. During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic there was a decrease of number of organ donors.
