The number of pension funds per average funding ratio in the Netherlands from the first quarter of 2015 to the first quarter of 2022 varied over time. In the first quarter of 2022, there were 55 pension funds in the Netherlands with an average funding ratio lower than 110 percent. This is a sharp decrease from the 136 pension funds reached in the first quarter of 2021, indicating that money reserves of pension funds in the Netherlands increased.
Pensions are of great importance in an aging society such as that of the Netherlands. The source lists that the funding ratio compares the assets from a pension fund against its liabilities and shows the financial health of Dutch pension funds. A percentage over 100 shows the assets outweigh the liabilities. Should pension funds be unable to reach that on the 31st of December, they are forced to create a plan of recovery. The funding ratio is reported to the Dutch Central Bank (DNB).
