The Caspian Sea is not only the largest lake in Asia, but also the largest in the world. Followed by the Baikal which is considered the deepest and the largest freshwater lake in the world. The Balkhash in Kazakhstan is ranked at the third position with an area of about 16.4 thousand square kilometers.
The Caspian sea
Despite the name, the Salt Lake is an endorheic water which doesn’t have a natural connection to the oceans. The Caspian Sea is located within the Aral–Caspian Depression in western Asia and in eastern most part of Europe. It borders Russia and Kazakhstan to the north, Turkmenistan to the east, Iran to the south and Azerbaijan to the west. The Caspian sea is best known for it’s production of caviar. Six sturgeon species, the Russian, bastard, Persian, sterlet, starry and beluga, are native to the Caspian Sea. In recent years, overfishing has threatened those fishes, so that environmentalists are committed to completely ban sturgeon fishing until the stock recovers. However, the high price of caviar allows local fishermen to use bribes to ensure that the authorities look the other way, making regulation ineffective in many places. As a result, caviar's illegal distribution is the highest in Russia.
