This statistic illustrates the import volume of direct reduced iron imported by the main importing countries in the European Union (EU) from 2010 to 2018. Direct reduced iron is produced through the reduction of iron ore via a reducing gas or coal. The reduction refers to a process which reduces iron oxides into metallic iron below the melting point of iron. Another term for direct reduced iron is sponge iron.
Italy was the main importer in eight out of the nine years recorded here, with 1.2 million metric tons imported in 2018.
