In 2023, the treasury collected a total of around 3.12 billion euros from alcohol-related taxes at federal and state level. This means that revenue from alcohol-related taxes fell by 1.5 percent compared to the previous year. This figure shows the total revenue from alcohol tax (until 2017 spirits tax), beer tax, sparkling wine tax, intermediate products tax and alcopop tax.
Taxes are compulsory levies that the state collects from citizens and companies. Tax revenue is the largest and most important source of income for public coffers in Germany.
