As of 2018, the share of viewing time of RÚV TV (short for Ríkisútvarpið) amounted to 55 percent. Thus, it is the largest public service broadcasting company in Iceland. Compared to the year before, this is a slight increase. Sýn recorded the second highest audience share in 2018.
The largest television broadcasters in Iceland
The public service broadcaster RÚV owns the two TV channels RÚV, RÚV 2, as well as three radio stations and several internet and mobile services. Popular programs include the quiz show Gettu betur (Make a Better Guess), the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup, as well as the Eurovision Song Contest. On the other hand, Sýn is a private television broadcaster. It is a merger of the telecommunications company Vodafone Iceland and the former 365 miðlar.
The television market in Iceland
In the past years, the revenue of the Icelandic television market steadily increased. In 2007, the value amounted to 8.4 billion Icelandic kronúr. A decade later, the television revenue in Iceland reached nearly 14 billion Icelandic kronúr. That year, roughly 2.9 billion kronúr were generated through TV advertising.
