Romania: incidences of terrorism 1984-2008

This statistic shows the number of terrorism-related incidences which occurred in Romania from 1984 to 2008. Overall, there were six separate instances of terrorism-related behavior during this period. The last successful terrorist attack in Romania was the grenade attack at the Jean Monnet High School in Bucharest. By contrast, the United Kingdom faced 63 terrorist attacks in 2019 alone.

Perception of terrorism in Romania

One of the most frequent targets for terrorist attacks in Romania was the Government. The civilian population has also been targeted six times since 1994. According to several surveys, Romanians do not consider terrorism to be a national concern and are not worried about experiencing a terrorist attack anytime soon. However, they do believe that this is one of the most difficult and important challenges for the European Union.

The bombing of Grozăvești in 1985

On May 26, 1985, two improvised explosive devices were placed under two cars parked in front of the student dormitories in the Grozăvești student complex in Bucharest. The attack was carried out by four followers of the Muslim Brotherhood and was targeted against Syrian students in Romania, who were enemies of the organization. Unfortunately, because of the lack of specialized equipment, the attempt to defuse one of the bombs resulted in the death of two officers from the Special Anti-Terrorist Union (USLA).
