Austrian transplant activity
There were 34 kidney transplant procedures per million population in Austria in 2021, a decrease from 2019 when the rate was 43.9. Kidney transplant procedures were the most carried out in Austria, followed by liver transplants at 17.7 per million and then lung transplants at 13.7 per million population. Although there were 68 deaths on the transplant waiting list in Austria in 2021, 36 of which were waiting for a kidney transplant.
Austrian transplant rate compared to rest of Europe
The rate of kidney transplants in Austria was the fifteenth-highest in the European Union in 2021. Spain was top of the rankings at 63.2 kidney transplants per million population. However, Austria did have the highest rate of lung transplants per million population in the EU.
