In each of the preceding two years the number of active patients awaiting a kidney transplant has been decreasing. Additionally, the number of patients requiring either a heart or lung transplant has dropped since 2019.

The rate of kidney transplants in Germany in 2021 was low compared to other EU countries. In 2021, Spain had the highest rate of kidney transplants at 63.2 per million population. Additionally, Germany was in the lower half of EU nations when it came to liver transplant rates in 2021. With Croatia having the highest rate of procedures at 25.4 per million.
