Netherlands followed with the second-highest rate at 58.6 kidney transplants per million. Latvia had one of the largest rate increase between the years increasing from 14.7 to 23.9 per million population.
Transplant activity in Spain
In comparison to the rest of Europe, Spain had the fourth-highest rate of liver transplants in 2021 with 23.1 liver transplants per million population carried out in the country. Additionally, in 2021, Spain had a heart transplant rate of 6.5 per million population, which was the fifth-highest rate in Europe in this year.
Waiting on the transplant list
In 2021, there were almost 6.9 thousand patients in Spain waiting for a kidney with a further 1.6 thousand patients on the liver transplant list. Although in 2021, there were 45 and 12 patients who died on the transplant list waiting for liver and lung transplants respectively.
