Finland had the highest rate of pancreas transplants in 2022, at 3.6 per million population. Although this was a decrease from 2021, when the rate was 5.6 per million. Estonia followed with the second-highest rate in 2022 at 3.1 pancreas transplants per million. Pancreas transplant procedures are used to treat individuals with diabetes by replacing their pancreas with one that can produce insulin from deceased donor.
Transplant activity in Finland
In comparison to the rest of Europe, Finland had the fourth-highest rate of kidney transplants in 2021. There were 48.7 kidney transplants per million population carried out in the country in 2021. Furthermore, Finland had a liver transplant rate of 13.6 per million population, placing it as the tenth-highest in Europe.
Waiting on the transplant list
In 2021, there were 774 patients waiting for a kidney transplant in Finland, a decrease from the number waiting in 2019. Although, the number of patients requiring liver, lung or heart transplants has increased since 2019.
