McDonald’s has been able to lower its energy consumption over the last few years. In 2017, energy consumption at McDonald’s company-owned restaurants totaled 1,420 gigawatt hours. McDonald’s plans to reduce energy usage through using innovate and efficient technologies like LED lighting and energy efficient kitchen equipment.
McDonald’s ESG performance
McDonald’s has stated their goals to reduce their use of packaging, while innovating new sustainable packaging materials and recycling methods. The company has vowed to source 100 percent of their guest packaging from renewable, recycled or certified sources by 2025. They are also aiming to recycle all of this guest packaging from their restaurants. McDonald’s has also strived to reduce greenhouse gas emissions emitted from its restaurants. It has set a goal to reduce emissions from its restaurants and offices by 36 percent by 2030 from the 2015 emission levels. McDonald’s has also committed to reducing emissions intensity across its supply chain. As a part of the company’s broader strategies, McDonald’s also launched beef sustainability goals that apply to the countries supplying most of the fast food restaurant’s beef.

2013 figures reflect primary data from 4,296 out of 4,310 Company-owned restaurants and 7,386 out of 22,236 Franchisee restaurants in our top 9 markets, totaling 11,682 out of 26,546 restaurants overall.
2014 figures reflect primary data from 4,066 out of 4,229 Company-owned restaurants and 5,983 out of 22,664 Franchisee restaurants in our top 9 markets, totaling 10,049 out of 26,893 restaurants overall.
2015 figures reflect primary data from at least 4,127 Company-owned restaurants and 5,778 Franchisee restaurants in our top 9 markets, totaling 9,905 out of 26,842 restaurants overall.
2016 figures reflect primary data from 3,645 Company-owned restaurants and 7,032 Franchisee restaurants in our top 9 markets, totaling 10,677 out of 27,453 restaurants overall.
2017 figures reflect analysis of primary energy data from 1,544 Company-owned restaurants and 7,379 Franchise restaurants in our top nine markets, totaling 8,923 out of 27,467 restaurants in those markets overall. Primary energy data was extrapolated to estimate energy consumption for all restaurants in the markets and ownership types reported. The top nine markets included approximately 73% of the restaurants worldwide (27,467 out of 37,858 as of December 31, 2017).
