The National Portrait Gallery is an art gallery based in London, displaying portraits of renowned British people. Between April 2020 and March 2021, the grant-in-aid provided by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) rose over the previous financial year, amounting to 9.4 billion British pounds. The gallery also received additional public funding of nearly 1.29 billion British pounds via the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme. In terms of private funding, earnings generated by non-public sources, including the gallery's self-generated income from trading, admissions, and fundraising, reached a record low of roughly 9.4 billion British pounds in 2020/2021. The drop in private earnings was partially due to the closure implemented during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and because the gallery closed for a planned refurbishment at the end of June 2020.
