In 2023, the violent crime severity index value in Canada remained nearly unchanged at around 99.45 indices. However, 2023 marked the third consecutive increase of the crime severity index.
Violent crime severity index in Canada from 2002 to 2023
The Violent Crime Severity Index (Violent CSI) takes into account both the volume and the seriousness of violent crime. In the calculation of the Violent CSI, each violent offence is assigned a weight, derived from average sentences handed down by criminal courts. The more serious the average sentence, the higher the weight for that offence. As a result, more serious offences have a greater impact on changes in the index.
