Number of street fuel stations in Germany 2024, by brand
There are a total of 2,254 Aral petrol stations on non-motorways in Germany, making Aral the most ubiquitous petrol station brand in the country. By comparison, the number of independent fuel outlets was just over the total number of Aral stations. Aral is a German brand established in 1924 and owned by BP since 2002. It serves the German and Luxembourgian market. Overall, the number of forecourts in Germany has been in decline, falling from a peak of 46,091 in 1970 to 14,442 by 2023. However, the rate of decline has slowed since 2005.
Petrol stations in Europe
Italy has the most petrol stations out of all European countries. As of 2023, there were around 21,700 operational and multiproduct service stations in the country, far more than elsewhere in Europe. The combined total for Europe amounted to around 137,504, however for some countries only figures for 2021 had been made available. Germany ranked second, followed by Turkey and Spain.
The ascent of the electric vehicle
Combustion engines and traditional fuels like petrol and diesel have greatly contributed to a rapidly warming climate. Because of this, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations have urged carmakers and car owners to make the switch to electric vehicles. This is also demonstrated by the steady increase in vehicle charging infrastructure. By 2023, there were nearly 125,400 public electric charging stations across Germany – the majority of which were for normal charge of less than 22 kilowatts.
