Italy has the most petrol stations out of all European countries. As of 2022, there were 21,700 operational and multiproduct service stations in the country. This was far more than those of the second entry, Germany, which was home to 14,452 stations. The combined total for Europe amounted to around 135,719, though the latest available figures for some countries were from 2019, 2020, or 2021.
Petrol station decline
In many European countries, the number of petrol stations is decreasing. In Germany, for example, the number of available stations decreased by more than half from 1970 to 1990, with a further 4,900 stations closing between 1990 and 2022. The number of outlets in 2022 was even lower than the number of operational petrol stations in 1950. Figures also declined in the United States, although the country is still home to an impressive number of petrol stations, when compared to European totals. In 2017, there were approximately 115,370 gas stations in the North American country.
The nascent Age of electric vehicles
Traditional fuels like petrol and diesel for combustion motors have greatly contributed to a rapidly warming climate. Because of this, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations alike have urged carmakers and car owners to make the switch to electric vehicles. This is also demonstrated by the steady increase in vehicle charging infrastructure. By 2022, there were around 535,700 public electric charging stations across Europe.
