Most of those waiting were residents in England, with a total of 231 patients, while Scotland had 24 patients on the heart transplant list, followed by 13 and 19 individuals waiting in Wales and Northern Ireland respectively.
Heart transplants carried out in the UK
In the period 2023/24, 237 heart transplants were carried out in the United Kingdom as a whole. The number of heart transplants in the UK has increased by eleven percent from the previous year. The majority of these (180), were carried out in England. A further 33 in Scotland were performed, the second highest in the UK.
Comparisons with Europe
The UK has a low rate of heart transplant procedures compared to other European nations at 2.9 heart transplants per million population in 2022. This ranked as 21st in Europe and was significantly lower than the rate of, for example, Slovenia which at 13.8 per million population was the highest.
