Kidney transplant list in the United Kingdom (UK) 2024

At the end of March 2024, there were 5,450 patients in England waiting for a kidney transplant. Meanwhile, Scotland had 485 individuals on the kidney transplant waiting list, followed by 216 and 78 waiting in Wales and Northern Ireland respectively. 

Kidney transplants carried out in the UK

There were 2,349 kidney transplant procedures carried out in the United Kingdom in 2022/23. A considerable majority of these were carried out in England, the largest and most populous country in the UK. Overall, the number of other organ transplants increased in the UK in 2021/22 compared with the previous year, which was much more greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Comparisons with Europe

The UK has a relatively high rate of kidney transplants compared to most European Union nations. With a rate of 3708 kidney transplants per million population in 2020. Spain had the highest rate in Europe at 72.9 transplants pmp.
