National Theatre attendance in the United Kingdom (UK) 2010-2016
The Royal National Theatre is one of the UK’s leading performing arts organizations, producing plays and performances for both British and international audiences. The National Theatre itself is made up of three theater venues in London: the Olivier theatre, the Lytellton theatre and the Dorfman theatre. Although a large proportion of attendance is recorded at these venues, the majority of paid attendances in 2015/16 came from shows performed in the West End and on international tours. In addition, the theater records and broadcasts performances internationally, increasing its global audience reach.
The National Theatre is one of the most subsidized theatre organizations by Arts Council England, the public funding body for the arts in England. However box office revenues, fundraising, trading and other types of income generated by the company far outweigh the level of public funding the theatre receives.
