In the years from 1960 to 2022, Swedes’ total consumption volume of fresh bananas, melons and similar fresh fruit generally increased. As of 2017, it amounted already to around 282 thousand metric tons, while it peaked at roughly 255 thousand metric tons in 2022. The volume of the average per capita consumption fluctuated. By the end of the period, 24.3 kilograms of fresh bananas, melons and other fresh fruits had been consumed on average per person in Sweden.
International trade with bananas
In recent years, the value of fresh or dried bananas imported into Sweden fluctuated. Peaks were recorded in 2015 and 2022, reaching an amount of approximately 1.6 billion Swedish kronor respectively. Originally, bananas came from Asia but today they come from all over the world. Also, Sweden exports fresh or dried bananas. The export value from the country amounted to 272 million Swedish kronor in 2022.
Fairtrade bananas
Fairtrade helps to make fruit farming more sustainable by guaranteeing fair prices to the farmers. Since 2013, the sales value of fair-trade bananas in Sweden rose rapidly. As of 2015 and 2016, it reached a value of around 670 million Swedish kronor.
