Petroleum was the most consumed energy source in Texas in 2020, with an annual consumption of roughly 6.2 quadrillion British thermal units. By comparison, the Lone Star state consumed approximately 1.2 trillion British thermal units of energy from renewable sources. Texas is the largest U.S. consumer of natural gas and coal.
Energy consumption in Texas in 2020, by fuel
(in trillion British thermal units)
The source makes the following specifications:
Natural gas: excludes supplemental gaseous fuels that are commingled with natural gas.
Petroleum: excludes fuel ethanol blended into motor gasoline. Fuel ethanol is included in "Renewable Energy.
Renewable energy: includes conventional hydroelectric power, biomass (wood and biomass waste, fuel ethanol, and losses and co-products from fuel ethanol production), geothermal, solar thermal and photovoltaic, and wind energy.
Net interstate flow of electricity: includes the energy losses associated with the generation, transmission, and distribution of the electricity
flowing across state lines. A positive number indicates that more electricity came into the state than went out of the state during the year.
Net electricity imports: electricity traded with Canada and Mexico. Calculated by converting net imports in kilowatt hours by 3,412 Btu per kilowatt hour.
