In 2020, China Energy Investment was the leading utility worldwide based on renewable energy capacity, with more than 42 gigawatts installed. State Power Investment ranked second, with almost 39 gigawatts. At the time, six of the top ten renewable electricity utilities were located in China.
Global utilities in the renewable energy industry – additional information
In 2020, about 91 percent of Spain’s Acciona’s electricity capacity was generated from renewable sources, making it one of the leaders among global electricity utilities. While Chinese companies led the ranking in terms of installed capacity, European companies had the largest renewable contribution to the power mix. China General Nuclear was the only Chinese company to make the top 10 that year, generating about 36 percent of its total electricity capacity from renewables. China General Nuclear operates nuclear plants in several locations across the country, with more facilities planned for the near future. Despite its name, the utility is also increasing its operations in renewable energy industries, including wind, solar, and hydroelectricity.
One of the largest electric utilities in the United States is NextEra Energy, with a market value of roughly 160 billion U.S. dollars as of April 2021. NextEra is one of the largest wind owners in the United States. In the U.S., many Midwest utilities are beginning to use power purchase agreements to increase their hold in the wind industry, however, these utilities still tend to rely heavily on local coal resources.
