This statistic depicts the number of adults hospitalized after a suicide attempt in the United States from 2013 to 2021. In 2021, there were some 517 thousand adults hospitalized overnight or longer after attempting suicide. It has been found that the death rate for suicide in the U.S. for males has remained higher than that of females for the last decades.

NSDUH respondents who attempted suicide in the past 12 months were asked if they had been treated medically as a result of a suicide attempt, and subsequently those answering “yes” were asked if they had
stayed in the hospital overnight or longer because of a suicide attempt. Respondents with unknown suicide information were excluded.
