In 2022, the volume of radioactive waste stored or to be stored in France was around 1.8 million cubic meters. Over one million of them were of low-to-intermediate or very low radioactivity and required short-term management. The remaining of the total nuclear waste present on the French territory in 2022 had a lifetime of hundreds of thousands of years. France is currently developing the project of a deep geological disposal facility to store high-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste.
