The number of practicing midwives in Iceland decreased by 16 practicing midwives (-5.65 percent) since the previous year. Nevertheless, the last two years recorded a significant higher number of midwives than the preceding years. A practicing midwife is a healthcare professional responsible for care and support of pregnant women, especially during labor and birth. Midwives own a license to practice following midwifery studies.
