This timeline gives an overview of the volume of fresh cheese produced from cow’s milk in France from 2009 to 2019. It appears to have decreased over the years: from more than 660,000 tons in 2014 to about 590,000 tons in 2019. Fresh cheese was the most important type of cheese within the total French cow’s milk cheese production, which amounted to more than 1.7 million tons in 2019.
Known for their consumption of dairy products, the French appear to largely enjoy consuming cheese regularly: more than half of the respondents in a survey from 2019 declared eating some cheese daily or several times a week. However, while people aged older than 50 years old were more than 90 percent to answer consuming cheese at least once a week, they were just about 70 percent of people aged less than 35 years old to say so.
