The hotel offer in Iceland throughout 2022 reached pre-COVID-19 levels, after having dropped significantly in 2020 and 2021. For instance, only 91 hotels were operating in the Nordic country at the beginning of the pandemic. This figure went down to 85 in January 2021. In the most touristic months of 2022, there were 170 hotels open for travelers in Iceland.
The hotel industry in Iceland
Iceland's hotel industry offered 11 thousand rooms in 2022. Nearly half of them were in the country's capital, Reykjavik, where hotel occupancy exceeded 70 percent in that same year. By contrast, the West/Westfjords region registered an occupancy below 45 percent. Of all international tourists, German tourists stayed the longest in tourist lodgings in the Nordic country, with 9.8 nights on average, followed by the French at 9.1 nights.
Iceland's tourism demographics
Iceland’s international tourism experienced a remarkable boom in 2022, welcoming 4.5 million visitors, marking a stark increase of 136 percent compared to the previous year, nearly returning to pre-pandemic levels. The country's landscape attracts young adults for the most part. In 2022, travelers between 25 and 34 years of age accounted for around one-third of air arrivals, while the follwing age group (35 to 44 years) constituted the second-largest segment.
