The total number of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cash withdrawals made in the euro area decreased between 2017 and 2023. In 2017, it reached the highest number observed since 2020, amounting to approximately 7.6 billion. Yet, it significantly declined to 5.4 billion in 2023. The decrease in cash withdrawals across the euro area coincides with the increased use of payment cards at the point of sale (POS).
