Annual number of POS terminals in France 2000-2023
Between 2009 and 2023, the number of payment terminals in points of sale (POS terminals) has significantly increased: from almost 1.4 million in 2009 to more than three million in 2023. These POS terminals are payment terminals for credit or debit card transactions. The number of payment cards issued in France reached more than 87 million in 2020
Paying with a credit card: the most common payment method
In the Statista Global Consumer Survey conducted in early 2020, more than six French respondents out of ten said having paid with a credit card in stores, restaurants or other points of sales during the past year: it was the second most used payment methods in physical stores after cash. Moreover, almost 90 percent of the French surveyed in 2018 stated using a credit card for online purchases, while about half of them stated having used an online payment service.
Innovative payment methods gaining on popularity
Among emerging payment methods, the use of contactless payments with a bank card was the most popular in France in 2018: 61 percent of French people had already used this mean of payment, while online payment services were used by half of those surveyed. Peer-to-peer payment services were also gaining interested users. Regarding the popularity of these services, PayPal was the most known app for peer-to-peer online payments, and the French alternative Paylib ranked second.
