Glencore and other leading European mining companies
Glencore plc is a commodity trading and mining company with its headquarters located in Barr, Switzerland. Although headquartered in Europe, only 29 percent of Glencore’s revenue was attributable to European operations in 2023, with Asia accounting for the largest share of company revenue.
Anglo American, with its headquarters in London, UK, is another multinational mining company that ranks highly among European mining companies and global mining companies alike. The company was the eighth-largest mining company worldwide based on revenue in the financial year 2023, while it ranked second among Europe’s mining companies that year.
Largest mines in Europe
Kiruna Mine located in Sweden and owned by the Swedish mining company Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB was the largest underground mine in Europe in 2022, with around 27 million metric tons of iron ore being mined that year. When it comes to surface mines, Aitik Mines, also located in Sweden, was the largest surface mine in Europe based on production volume in 2022. Around 43.2 million metric tons of copper was at the Boliden-owned open pit mine that year.
