Spain produced over 3.3 million metric tons of oranges during the 2021/2022 season. Tangerines and lemons ranked second and third, with approximately 2.1 million and 1 million metric tons respectively. Grapefruit was Spain’s least produced citrus, with a production of roughly 84 thousand metric tons.
Spain: an important source of citrus in Europe
Spain exported small varieties of citrus fruit overseas during the 2020/2021 season, just slightly less than oranges, which had an export volume reaching over 1.7 million metric tons during that season. Germany is a main destination of Spanish exports of oranges, with the Central European country receivingalmost 450 thousand metric tons of this type of citrus, followed by France with over 370 thousand tons.
Domestic consumption and price
The latest consumption results seem to imply that Spaniards are gradually abandoning the habit of eating oranges. The annual per capita consumption of oranges has been dwindling in recent years, reaching its lowest point in 2021 at slightly over 15.1 kilograms per person, down from a record high of 21.4 kilograms per person in 2013. Prices, however, have experienced an uptrend during the same period, with its lowest point recorded in 2014 at 0.8 euros per kilogram of oranges and increasing to 1.11 euro per kilogram in 2021.
