Leading car model registered in Italy 2021

The Fiat Panda was by far the most popular model in Italy with close to 112,300 new car registrations in 2021. Fiat was also Italy's leading car brand that same year. Fiat became part of Amsterdam-based Stellantis in early 2021.

Electric car sales take off

In 2021, plug-in electric vehicles (including BEV, HEV, PHEV, and REx) accounted for about 38.3 percent of new passenger cars sold in Italy. Electric car sales are projected to increase in the coming years. According to a 2020 survey, the share of new car buyers in Italy who plan to buy a vehicle with a conventional powertrain dropped to below 30 percent.

Italians prefer compact cars 

The ranking highlights the major role played by small cars due to multiple aspects such as fuel consumption, taxation, general maintenance, insurance, and product-life cycle. The Fiat Panda and Fiat 500 cars are segment-A cars. Meanwhile, second-ranked Lancia's Ypsilon is a segment-B car. Both segments are among the most sold types of passenger car in Italy, along with medium cars.
