The use of prepaid debit cards by households in the United States in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019 can be categorized by geographic region. In 2019, 9.3 percent of households in the south of the United States made use of a prepaid debit card, making it the most popular region to do so. In comparison, around 7.1 percent of households in the west did so in 2019.
Unbanked households are those without an account at an insured institution. Underbanked households have an account at an insured institution, but have also obtained financial services and products from non-bank, alternative financial services (AFS) providers in the last 12 months. Households which used prepaid card in the previous 12 months.
