Percentage of Medicare decedents who were hospice patients in the United States from 2019 to 2021, by race and ethnicity*
In previous years, the source has presented data on the share of Medicare beneficiaries who used hospice by race. In an effort to focus on equity, they, since 2019, present data focused on the percentage of Medicare decedents by race who used hospice.
*Shares of Medicare decedents (beneficiaries who died) is calculated as:
(number of beneficiaries in the group who both died and received hospice) divided by (total number of beneficiaries in the group who died)
This calculation compares how each group accesses hospice but does not compare size of the groups or health disparities or inequities factors which can impact those who access Medicare.
