This statistic displays characteristics of the U.S. population that provides care for someone age 65 and older due to conditions related to aging, in 2012-2013. During this time, 13 percent of the population provided elderly care and were a parent of household children under the age of 18. In the United States, 16 percent of the population provides care for the elderly, with those between the age of 45 and 64 years, providing the most care.
Characteristics of U.S. eldercare providers in 2012-2013
Data include all noninstitutionalized persons age 15 and over. Eldercare providers are those who in the prevous 3 to 4 months cared for someone with a condition related to aging. Estimates were calculated for persons who cared for at least one person age 65 or over. Data are annual averages for 2012 and 2013.
