In 2022, Taiwan’s energy consumption by sectors reached approximately 84 billion liters of oil equivalent. Taiwan’s economy, however, lacks essential resources for the production of electricity making it a net importer of energy.
Energy production and consumption
Limited domestic resources, however, have no impact on the ever growing demands for energy and power generation. In 2022, around 274 terawatt hours of electricity were produced conventionally in Taiwan. About 98 percent of Taiwan’s energy supply during that year was imported much like in the years before. For this, the island nation relies on trading partners such China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Qatar.
Alternative sources of power generation
Even though green energy power production reached new highs, it still lacks behind the production volume of biomass and waste. Taiwan continues to make efforts to establish and switch over completely to non-conventional forms of power generation. So far its hydropower market has been promising with domestic sales of hydro electric power having reached 584 billion New Taiwan dollars in 2020. Investments are also being made to harness wind energy for power generation through the development of onshore wind farms.
