In 2022, 13.3 million hectoliters of wine were released for consumption by HM Revenue and Customs. For the past fifteen years the volume cleared for consumption has mostly been stable. For the entire period under consideration volumes cleared have been over 12.5 million hectoliters.
Wine in the UK
The data includes both, wine produced in the UK and wine imported from other countries. Wine production in the UK has been ongoing since Roman times. In recent years conditions have improved for growing wine in the UK andproduction has increased significantly compared to the early 2000s. Wine imports reached new heights in 2021, with imports being worth over three billion British Pounds.
Wine consumption
Wine drinkers in the United Kingdom consumed about 244 milliliters of wine per week in 2021 spending an average of about 204 pence. Most purchases were done on-site at wineries.
